Myles grew up in a Christian family on a farm in Spokane, Washington, after moving there as a child from northern Idaho, with his parents. 
Mark Tremonti thinks that Myles Kennedy is an atheist, although in an article from November 2010, Kennedy said he places himself “somewhere in the middle” between being an atheist and a Christian.  In an interview he also mentioned that despite being raised in a Christian household, he is not a religious person and he does not belive in any organized religion. In another interview he also says; “I would consider myself a part of the growing segment of people who question authority and scrutinize concepts that no longer seem as logical as they once did. I don’t find peace in the same concepts that many hold as truth. Believe me, I tried. It’s not like I didn’t spend most of my life submersed in the bosom of doctrine or dogma.
When he was 4 years old his father, Richard Bass, died. And his mother subsequently went on marry a minister, and the family took the surname Kennedy.

He attended Mead High School on the north side of Spokane, along with his future Mayfield Four band-mates Marty Meisner, Zia Uddin and Craig Johnson.

When Myles was 15 years old he started as a Jimmy Page wannabe. He was using tennis racket for a guitar, Kennedy could stand before his bedroom mirror for hours on end, playing all the classics back then, some of them were; “Immigrant Song”, “Black Dog”, “Dazed And Confused”, and “Communication Breakdown”.
At first he didn’t even consider trying so learn guitar – it looked too hard! But when he finally decided to try, his father offered to pay him for cleaning out horse stalls at a dollar a stall so he could earn money for the guitar.

Myles found his voice through hours of listening to his parents’ Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye albums. He also enjoys a lot of the Stax/Volt stuff and Otis Redding, considering this to be the backbone of pop music.

During high school, Myles played guitar in his high schools’ jazz band, as well as playing the trumpet with the school band.

When Myles began to work on new music, unfortunately, it was then he damaged his ears by listening to music on his headphones at volumes that were too high, this later on resulted in tinnitus, a term given to describe the ringing or buzzing some people hear despite absence of an external around. Myles was left with the possibility of never playing rock ‘n’ roll that he always had. He continued to work on his music, but with more of an acoustic approach.

(vad jag minns dårå, hittar inte det dära klippet igen tyvärr) visst, det hade la jag med gjort, men förmodligen så är detta anledningen? för hans tinnitus...)
